Interpretation

The term interpretation refers to the process of making a Meaning from a text.

All texts can be read / interpreted in a differing ways depending on the readers;

  • Cultural, Social or Situational Contexts
  • Values
  • Social, Political and Religious Beliefs
    • Their Ideology

Pretty much 1:1 relation to Ideas.

Types of Readings

Dominant Reading

The most popular reading for most people, it is the normal way to interpret a text.

Alternate reading

any interpretation that is different from the dominant reading, it is usually focused on nuances, or little gaps or saliences to create meaning that is grounded but not emphasised.

Resistant reading

Contradicts the dominant interpretation, and challanges the assumptions underlying the text.

Resistant Reading Example

e.g. in the Relic Film Poster from the Mock Exam,A resistant reading could view it as insensitive those with family members with dementia
